Author Interview: Carla Kovach

I rencently read and reviewed Carla Kovach's latest book The Houseshare and really enjoyed this psychological thriller. Carla enjoyed writing stories and plays from a young age but started up again ten years ago. She was Inspired by theatre and bringing words to life, and she began writing for stage. That inspiration soon developed into a love of novel and screenplay writing. Bookouture offered her a publishing deal. Her most ambitious and popular books to date are the Detective Inspector Gina Harte series which has even been translated into Dutch. She is also a USA Today bestselling author from the UK and is published by Bookouture, Sphere and Boekerij. Her books can be found here on Amazon.
How long have you been writing or when did you start?
I feel as though I’ve always written, even as a young child and before that, I enjoyed imagining stories in my head. Writing and reading are lifelong passions of mine but I got more serious about them around ten years ago, maybe a little longer.

What’s your favorite writing snack or drink?
I love chocolate and coffee, but now I stick to no food snacks and decaf coffee. Writing is a very inactive profession so I try to really watch what I eat otherwise I feel a bit yuck. If I was on a food blow out, it would be salt and vinegar nuts and a huge bar of dark chocolate. This happens very occasionally- haha.

If your latest book were made into a movie, which actors would play your characters?
My latest published book is, The Houseshare. If I needed to choose a Libby and Tim, I’d go with, Georgia May Foote, for Libby. Georgia has read some of my books and has been kind enough to make contact and tell me how much she enjoyed them. She’s a fabulous actor and she’d be on the top of my wish list. As for Tim, I’d love Daniel Radcliffe to play him. That would be the dream.

What is your favorite childhood book?
I don’t have to think about that question for long. It was Roald Dahl’s, The Witches. I literally damaged the book as I read it so often.

How do you celebrate when you finish your book?
I normally go out for brunch or have some TV time. The TV time normally involves slobbing out on the sofa to watch a box set.

What is your writing process like?
I write in blocks of around three hours a day when I’m working on a draft. That seems to be my creative limit. I work either a morning or an afternoon and the rest of my time is used for edits, admin, social media, research or planning my next chapters.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?
That’s a toughie as for each book, the idea comes from a different spark. Sometimes a character has such a strong story or voice, I develop them first. Other times, I imagine an opening or a crescendo and the plot thickens from there.

How do you select the names of your characters?
I use social media profiles, credits at the end of films and lists of baby names most of the time
